Contemplating Christ

The season of Lent, known in the traditional Christian calendar as the 40 days before Easter Sunday, not including Sundays, lasts from Ash Wednesday to the end of Passion or Holy Week, which this year falls between 17 February to 4 April 2010. During Lent, Christians take time to contemplate our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, particularly His death and resurrection.

It is also a special time to observe the spiritual disciplines of fasting and simplicity, in line with remembering the passion (passio, Latin for suffering) of Christ during the final week leading to His death (Good Friday) and resurrection (Easter Sunday). It is both a time for somber reflection as well as hopeful celebration, for we serve a risen Saviour, knowing with assurance that Jesus did not just die for our sins, and remained in the tomb, but instead rose from the dead three days later, overcoming sin and death, and has ascended to the right hand of God our Father.

As we embark this weekend on a new phase of our church history, beginning our services here at Causeway Point for the next 1½ years, anticipating the rebuilding of our new church building, let us keep our focus on our Lord Jesus Christ, and persevere in our vision as a church to be a God-loving community, touching and transforming lives in Woodlands and the world, as the author of Hebrews writes in Heb 12:1-3,
let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
