Pentecost Sunday

As I was reflecting on commemorating Pentecost Sunday today, God reminded me of the biblical account in Acts 2, when on the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended and filled the believers of the early church for the first time, as prophesied and promised by Jesus (Acts 1:8). Next to the death and resurrection of Jesus Himself, this would likely be the second most significant event in the history of Christianity.

Song - Who is there like You? by Isi DeGersigny

1. Who is there like You O God?
You who created us in Your likeness
Who is there like You O God?
It's an honour, Lord to stand and worship You

Chorus: We lift our hands to the great I AM
Who was and is and is to come
We lift our hands to the great I AM
Who can compare with You?

2. Who is there like You O God?
You who created us for Your pleasure
Who is there like You O God?
You've appointed us to be Your very own

Rom 6:1-8 - Dead or alive?

Just spoke at our church's baptism service. 24 people got baptised today, 5 from the Mandarin congregation earlier during service by sprinkling, and 19 from the English congregation, including 5 youths, at the service I spoke at. Due to our church rebuilding, we had our baptism service separate from our Sunday service (which we used to incorporate into), and we also had it off-site, at our sister church, Covenant EFC (Woodlands). About 200 people turned up, including many friends and family members of candidates to witness the event. 4 of the candidates shared their testimonies, and all the candidates had their written testimonies in a booklet given to those who came too. I shared a short sermonette from Rom 6:1-8, entitled "Dead or alive?" You can read the transcript below.Read the full article >>

E-book: Preaching & the Emerging Church by John Bohannon (free)

The Resurgence recently released a free e-book "Preaching & the Emerging Church" by John S. Bohannon.
The emerging church movement has significantly influenced contemporary Christianity. Evidence abounds—the creation of blogs, conferences, seminary classes, doctorate programs, and the birth of an entire class of literature. In recent years much has been written to help the church better understand this latest Christian phenomenon. However, a deficiency still exists when it comes to understanding the role of preaching within the movement. Since preaching is God’s appointed means to convert sinners and preserve the church, then an understanding of this movement’s preaching is of vital importance to the church and the culture it serves.
